Blog Post #52

If I was Tally, I would ask the warden to make me pretty. It would probably either be that or get dragged into Special Circumstances to be punished by Dr. Cable.

Blog Post #51

The only thing Tally will regret, I think, is not telling everyone she betrayed them sooner. Now that Smoke is destroyed and Az is dead, I think David's going to be pretty mad at her. Maybe not hate her completely, but he'll be disappointed.

Blog Post #50

I think Maddy made the right choice of not forcing Shay to take the cure. I totally agree with her speech about "being like Dr. Cable" if she had given it to her it against her will. However, the real, ugly Shay would have done in a heartbeat, so I guess it was kind of hard to let it go. :/

Blog Post #49

If you were Shay, would you get the cure? Why or why not??

Well, it depends. If they lesions were working on me, I probably wouldn't because, well, I'd be brainwashed. But if it was my decision, I would, because there was only a 1% chance of me turning into a "vegetable". I think that's a reasonable chance for me to take.

Blog Post #48

"Tally thought of the lesions on Shay's brain, the tiny cancers or sounds or whatever they are that she didn't even know she had. They were in there somewhere changing her friend's thoughts, warping her feelings, gnawing at the roots of who she was."

I think that Tally is very frustrated right now. Her friend has just practically been brainwashed, and she has all this gross stuff on her brain. To me, this is Tally kind of internally freaking out, because she was too late. Tally knew her friend wasn't the same person she was as an ugly. :(

Blog Post #47

Events
  1. After discovering Shay was pretty, Tally talks to her and realizes her mind has been changed with the operation.
  2. Tally and David rescue some uglies, including Maddy and Croy.
  3. The former Smokies prepare to leave on hoverboards.

KICKER:

Maddy tells David his father (Az) is DEAD! :(

Blog Post #46

"Radiology. Neurology. Magnetic Imaging," she read softly. "Operating Theatre Two."
Play on words or deeper meaning?

I think, as they are passing these rooms, Tally and David are hoping the Smokies aren't in them. All the names sound slightly scary and operation-y.

Labels:
Radiology: something that has to do with x-rays.
Neurology: science of nervousness...or the nervous system?
Magnetic imaging: maybe a way to view the operation magnetically...
Operating Theatre Two: self-explanatory...the second room for operating.
Interrogation Room 1 & 2: two rooms for questioning people.
Isolation Room One: where uglies sit silently alone...maybe for punishment.
Disorientation Room One: where the workers can deceive the uglies so they get a good outcome. (for them)

Pretty Shay

"She was tall and elegant, every feature perfection. Her eyes-deep and soulful, flecked with copper and gold-widened with a troubled look. Her generous lips parted wordlessly, and she raised one graceful hand. Tally's heart almost stopped at the beauty of her confusion." Uglies, pg. 381 :)

Blog Post #45

If I could post an important message, it would be "Remember that thing that you were supposed to remember...it's important!!!", because I would appreciate someone reminding me about things I forget. I know what it's like to forget stuff, and I'm trying to be helpful. :)

Blog Post #44

Tally has changed in many ways. The most obvious change is that she no longer wants to be pretty, but would rather stay ugly. However, another important change is that Tally sees what's wrong with being pretty, and wants to help. The Tally at the beginning of the book probably couldn't care less.

Blog Post #43

I think Tally's plan will work, but she's going to bounce around a bit. Tally is driven by the desire to make it up to the Smokies (for destroying their home), which, in my opinion, is valid. She really needs to make it up to them!

Blog Post #42

David and Tally describe the Rusties as crazy, with a few exceptions (not many, apparently). I think it's accurate, but ONLY IN THEIR POINT OF VIEW. This is because they are more advanced in resources (they talk about the use of cars, and how Rusties are so dumb to use them).

WEAKNESSES OF OUR SOCIETY:
  • using up resources
  • general problems (like crime)

WEAKNESSES OF THEIR SOCIETY:

  • lying to their people (about becoming pretty)

Hurricane Ike (pronounced /ˈaɪk/) was the third costliest hurricane to ever make landfall in the United States. It was the ninth named storm, fifth hurricane and third major hurricane of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season.[1][2] It was a Cape Verde-type hurricane, as it started as a tropical disturbance near Africa at the end of August. On September 1, 2008, it became a tropical storm west of the Cape Verde islands.[3][4] By the early morning hours of September 4, Ike was a Category 4 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 145 mph (230 km/h) and a pressure of 935 mbar (27.61 inHg).[5] That made it the most intense Atlantic storm of 2008. Ike passed over the Turks and Caicos Islands as Category 4, with winds 135 mph (217 km/h) on September 7. Moving west along Cuba, it made 2 landfalls as a Category 4 hurricane on September 7 and a Category 1 hurricane on September 9. Ike made its final landfall over Galveston, Texas as a strong Category 2 hurricane, with Category 5 equivalent storm surge, on September 13, 2008 at 2:10 a.m. CDT. Hurricane-force winds extended 120 miles (193 km) from the center.[inconsistent]

Tally had "rescued" the magazines from Dr. Cable, something she wouldn't have to do if she hadn't betrayed her friends from the Smoke. I also think it's ironic that Tally was once on Dr. Cable's side, so she was trying to end a battle she started.

In the process of Tally's "victory", the Smoke was lost. Also ironic, because there was a bigger loss than victory...

Blog Post #39

I do NOT think Tally is "amazing". First of all, after everything she did (stole David, betrayed the Smokies, etc.), Tally lied AGAIN to David. The least she could do was tell the truth! Yes, I think she should feel VERY guilty. Sorry, Tally; I know you were trying to make it up to them or something, but you can't cover everything up with lies. :P

Blog Post #38

I think the voice in the dark is one of the Smokies that survived the invasion (possibly David?). I think Tally and the mysterious Smokie will try to find other survivors.

Blog Post #37

To me, self preservation means keeping yourself out of trouble, even if it means lying. Sometimes self preservation is important, but it depends...keeping yourself out of trouble as in staying out of a fight or argument is one thing. But lying about something you did (that was BAD) is completely different. I don't know if I would lie, but if the situation was similar to Tally's, I probably would. :/

Blog Post #36

Tally definitely changed her mind about the Smoke, and truly wants to save it. I think Tally will do anything she can to undo what she's done, or at least help her friends. I think she is on the Smokies' side.

Blog Post #35

INVASION

I don't think this is the climax of the book. The climax is where the problem begins to resolve itself. To me, the big problem has just formed. :/

Blog Post #34

"What you do, they way you think, makes you beautiful."

@ HOME:
My mother is beautiful because she is always willing to help. She is always volunteering to do things and loves to answer questions. I think her approachable personality makes her beautiful. :)

@ SCHOOL:
Emily is beautiful because she laughs a lot. Her GIGANTIC smile lights up the classroom. She's also the only person who puts up with my awful jokes. ;)

Blog Post #33

"Becoming pretty doesn't just change the way you look...it changes the way you think."

When becoming pretty, I would, of course, want to be pretty, but not be such and airhead. So, in other words, I would not want to change mentally, but have the same thoughts (and BRAIN) I always had.

Blog Post #22 (sorry, in the wrong spot AGAIN)

I think the flying machine was a helicopter and people from Smoke were in it. Maybe it was some form of recreation...? :/

Blog Post #32

"But you do know about genetics don't you? Sure I know all about genes. I knew two sisters, uglies, who looked almost the same. But parents and children? That's just weird."

This tells me that when the operation is done, most (if not all) of the resemblances to parents are scrubbed, rubbed, and polished away. It also tells me that the society is deceiving (lying) or doesn't know the truth about genes. :O

I think being pretty is just a state of mind. When you're pretty, you think you're better than the uglies. To me, that's pretty much it.

Blog Post #31

personification & simile

"Dr. Cable's pendant seemed to grow heavier and heavier, wound around her neck as tightly as the vines, brush, and roots grasping the railroad tracks." Uglies, pg. 243

imagery

"Up until now, the whole day had been tainted by suspicion and doubt, but David's face shone with admiration for what she had done." -Uglies, pg. 249

I think it required bravery to meet David's parents, especially for Tally. Tally had been slightly afraid of them after hearing that they had "reversed the operation". Also, I think it would take bravery to meet anyone.

Blog Post #30

Do you think Shay has a right to be jealous of Tally? Why or why not?

I don't think Shay has a right to be jealous of Tally. Tally didn't plan for David to pay so much attention to her, and she is certainly conflicted about what is going on. Tally has no more idea about what David is doing than Shay does. :/

Gifts

I don't remember receiving a certain gift that made others jealous, but I have received many gifts that have made my brother jealous. Even so, many of them have no special meaning (to him, anyways), and were meant to only be memories. :)

Blog Post #29

It would have been easier for Tally to activate the pendant when she got to the Smoke, because she wouldn't feel close to anyone or feel like she was betraying them (too much). However, since Tally waited, she felt like she would be betraying her friends instead of strangers. :(

Blog Post #28

I think David's parents ran away because of the same reasons Shay and the others did: they didn't "believe" in being pretty. For some reason or another, they just didn't want to be pretty.

"'They reversed the operation?'
'Yes.'"

Blog Post #26

I can conclude from Shay's description of the model that pretties must be VERY pretty if they are so disgusted with the magazine pictures. I think it's strange that they notice (and criticize) the people's non-proportional faces. They got right the fact that many people stopped eating to become models.

Blog Post #25

David

  • a few years older than Tally
  • knows a lot about the Smoke
  • "nice smile"
  • "And his face held a kind of confidence that Tally had never seen in an Ugly before."

Blog Post #24

Events

  1. Tally is helped to safety by rangers.
  2. The rangers tell Tally they are burning everything to destroy white tiger orchids, which crowds out all other species of plants.
  3. Tally is taken to Smoke.
  4. Tally waits on the "bald head", which was her next clue.

Respond to the quote:

"...Tally was stuck out here in the wild forever. Ugly for life. Her only way home was to betray her friend."

In my opinion, this quote illustrates Tally almost giving up. Basically, she is telling herself that the only way out is to do what she has been ordered to do. :(

Blog Post #23

simile:

"Her grippy shoes were now ruined, their soles cracked like sunbaked mud..."

personification:

"Tally gulped a few breaths of smoky air, then was slapped in the face by a wave."

imagery:

"She caught glimpses of masked faces: huge, inhuman eyes staring at her unblinkingly."

Blog Post #21

The day before science fair was due, I woke up and got to work on it. Not because I wanted to, or because someone was forcing me to, but I knew I had to do it. By the end of the day, I had successfully completed my lovely science fair project.------I think a lot of people can relate to my decision, and let me tell you, THEY SHOULD BE PROUD. I am very very proud. :)

Predict what will happen next in Uglies.

I think Tally will have another encounter with "the machine". :O
